Met him a number of times at the old Agora (now Newport) he and a zillion others played thru a Crown amp I sold Bowtie. Along with a couple other Crowns and modded 210 bins, JBL and Altec HF setup. Prolly pictures SOMEWHERE. Too much stuff I got.

Wow--that is some gorgeous classical guitar playing. Great melody and chords, and very fluently played--anyone know if that's a cover or if he wrote that song? Either way, very impressive! OG, this reminds me of your old signature (a quote about how important an attribute TONE is)--this guy has amazing tone...... Phenomenal that he can do that with nine fingers.

AB, I think anyone watching that clip would be hard pressed to deny that Gilmour can really play some tasty leads--nice video!

Awesome stuff. Nothing like Floyd on the Altecs with the 18" subs shaking the foundation.
This stuff is so good you can crank it up and just get lost in it.

I use a pair of Renkus/PAS duplexes for computer speakers.

At the risk of seeming (even more) ignorant, don't most duplexes have a fairly narrow "sweet spot"? Not that it's a big deal, but wouldn't it sound a lot better if you backed up your chair about 20 feet? Seems like the best sound is going to be well in back of you. Regardless of placement, your set up blows away the Altec (sparkomatic) speakers I use for my computer.....

indeed, sometimes the chair gets backed up a few feet and the speakers toed in.

The setup is a bit different now than it was in that pic. Since i've lost a bunch of room, the 9849's are on top of the Renkus duplexes, but ideally i need to get them up 2 feet higher so they can enjoy the immediate boundary effect of the ceiling.

Funny thing, the Altec monitors that were engineered to be mounted high up like that, sound best that way.

Actually, that chair is still almost within the sweet spot from the other side of the room where the Krell FPB powered Westlake monitors reside.

Yes Ron I do. When I'm feeling lazy and don't feel like spinning vinyl. I use my computer with my external sound card. "Fast Track Pro" to the Altecs.... With either youtube vids or I run Foobar2000 and play .Flac files.

Funny thing, the Altec monitors that were engineered to be mounted high up like that, sound best that way.

Yeah the horns are at the bottom instead of at top for the ceiling mounting.They sound good like that when you are stationary.But have to be mounted so they point directly at the sweet spot.But if you have to move around the room you quickly move out of the sweet spot.And is not practical to keep adjusting if they are mounted up high.I prefer them on the floor much easier to adjust me thinks...

While this is absolutely a fact, i can't think of a small format Altec that doesn't do this until you get down to the hornless consumer models. The 9849's still maintain broader, and more even coverage in the horizontal plane than any system with 811, 511, or duplex in the same room, and they don't have that annoying HF null directly on axis like the sectorals especially the 511 that's detectable simply by turning your head a few degrees.

That said, any critical/focused listening i do is always from a fixed position. If i'm up moving about, there isn't much critique going on with my listening and directionality becomes rather moot.

One thing i think a lot of folks aren't aware of, or overlook with the 32 horn is that the "sweet spot" for HF/VHF in the vertical plane is on an axis that is NOT perpendicular to the horn mouth. Although the throat has a 90 degree bend, HF/VHF only makes a ~75 to ~80 degree turn before it exits. While the typical practice is to position most horns with the axis at the same vertical height as the listeners ears, this practice doesn't work with the 32.

Bowtie Hmm ? I was speaking generally of ceiling mounting studio monitors.And not your particular application since I have no idea of your ROOM SIZE,SITTING POSITION,SPEAKER LOCATION, etc... was speaking in general terms, but I think you already knew that Bowtie !
